Sales Pitch
A serious defensive asset who has a rapidly developing offensive game that could blossom in a hurry.
It didn't take long for NBA evaluators to notice the improved play from Florida State sophomore Devin Vassell. After a less than impressive freshman year for FSU, Vassell surged into the national spotlight with his notable play on both sides of the floor. Vassell will intrigue scouts and NBA personnel with his ability as a versatile defensive asset. He stands out with his anticipation and ability to make a team's defensive unit thrive. But there's a serious amount of potential when it comes to his offensive game as well. Vassell wasn't highly recruited out of high school and seemed to have everything "click" during his time in a Seminoles uniform. There's reason to believe that his best basketball is miles ahead of him still.
Pro Comparison
A dealer's choice of Robert Covington and Khris Middleton

  • Could argue that Vassell is the best defender in this year's class. Does a phenomenal job of being in the right place. Understands team rotations and when to help. Reads opposing offenses like a ball-hawking NFL safety. High energy defender, who doesn't give up on plays.

  • High release with his size makes him a difficult weapon for opposing defenses to deal with. Shot 41.5% from deep this year and looks to have plenty of offensive game waiting to be unlocked. Not afraid to work to get to his spots off of the dribble. Showed drastic improvements offensively from his freshman year.

  • He flies all over the place and makes an impact everywhere. Shows extra effort to make an impact in the little areas. Chase down artist who will fly in transition to recover and make a momentum changing block.

  • He has a good combination of height and length for a wing, but thin-framed moving forward. If he can add to his frame and improve his strength, could inject a serious spark to his already impressive defensively ability.

  • Frame also prevents him from finishing with contact in the lane. He's shifty but doesn't have that extra burst to blow by defenders and finish strong.
There's beginning to be some momentum building when it comes to the draft stock of Florida State wing Devin Vassell. At 6'7" with a reported 6'10" wingspan, Vassell has the ideal measurables teams will look for when it comes to a wing, but his defensive potential is what will have teams banging the table for him on draft day. Vassell stands out with his defensive awareness and his ability to dissect opposing offenses. If an NBA organization is convinced that he's only scratching the surface offensively as well, you could hear Vassell's name going somewhere in the Top 10 come draft day.
